Because (Spring 2008)

Because war is killing us.
our souls. our bodies.
our best intentions.
our imagination.
our friends. our adversaries.
our hopes and dreams.
our youth. our future.
our sense of humanity and dignity.
our civility.
our infrastructure of mind and matter.
our economy. our compassion.
Because war is killing us, suddenly and slowly,
and surely,
every last one of “us” and “them”...
Because my cousin came home from Iraq
all together...in pieces...
I cannot not sit here and interrupt
war as usual.
