Should You Paint Your Garage Floor?

Is painting your garage floor right for you?

Should you paint your garage floor? Well, when you consider the benefits, the answer is a resounding, Yes!

Painting your garage floor makes it more durable, makes cleaning it far easier and generally just brightens up the whole place.

But painting is also very messy and sometimes the preparation work is hard and even if you do it properly the end results can still be less than stellar. If you are thinking of doing it yourself then think again. You really do need professional help with this.

So what should you do?

Wax-base Paint

One thing to try is a simple wax-based paint that prevents oil stains and keeps your garage floor looking like new again. Plus it’s inexpensive, so it’s a good choice for people who aren’t very handy. But it does have its downsides.

Epoxy Paint

Epoxy is a great option because it actually bonds with oil stains, grease and dirt particles on any surface. If your concrete floor is getting stained then applying a thick layer of epoxy would probably solve your problem.

There’s one major disadvantage and that is that it can’t be used on painted and vinyl floors. Epoxies also dull the finish of your garage floor. If you are considering epoxy garage floor paint then it’s worth consulting the manufacturer’s instructions to see how much of it to use on your floor.

It’s worth mentioning that applying a thick coat of veneer over oil stains or other markings may not help either. Veneer simply coats over an oil stain with a shiny finish, which is exactly what attracts car thieves. If you decide that you want to seal your concrete floor then you should definitely look into an epoxy garage floor coating.

Acrylic Latex Paint

A back-up option that you might want to consider is an acrylic latex paint. Latex acrylic paint is probably the best surface preparation type to use when it comes to covering oil stains. Its durability makes it the ideal choice for covering any sort of irregular or sharp surface.

However, acrylic latex paint is expensive to purchase, and costs more than a comparable epoxy paint. For this reason, I don’t advise the use of latex acrylic paint on anything larger than a deck.

Hire Professionals

If you decide that you would like to hire a professional painter to coat your floor, then don’t let that stop you. Just remember to get the cheapest price possible, and to make sure that the paint job is going to last. If the paint job that you get absorbed into the concrete then it will be more likely to get stripped off. Plus, if you get an inferior quality paint then you’re going to have to replace it more frequently, which costs more money.

Using Epoxy Paint Kit

A cheaper alternative to using a professional painter is to get an epoxy paint kit. These kits can be purchased at most home improvement stores and are easy enough to assemble yourself. They contain an epoxy and a bonding agent, along with brushes and applicators that you only need to buy once.

You can apply the kit in a couple of hours and will have a great looking floor. The only drawback with these kits is that they can be more messy to put together, and the epoxy may not bond as well as you’d like it to.

Rust Bullet Coating

If neither of those options appeal to you, then you may want to try a rust bullet proof coating. This coating will protect your floor from being eaten by the little buggers that like to eat cars. It is not a paint that you can paint over, but if you do happen to want to repaint the whole thing, this would be the way to go. Each of these kits usually contain instructions on applying the rust bullet coating so you should have no trouble at all.

Densifier Sealer

In cases where you think that you may have to replace the entire floor, it’s probably best to just get a densifier sealer and use that instead of a paint job. A lot of people who repaint their floors use their garage floor paints and they find that the concrete begins to chip immediately after they apply the paint.

A densifier sealer has a chemical element to it that makes it stick to your concrete and makes it last much longer than paint. The sealer also keeps water out of the cracks and crevices where the paint flakes and chips off.

It also adds an extra layer of protection to your flooring so in the event that you do crack or gouge a small area, it won’t cause as much damage.

No matter how you decide to paint your garage floor, you will experience amazing benefits, which will help to make your home more attractive and easier to clean.

One of the most important benefits of painting your concrete garage floor with an epoxy coating is that it is able to actually add onto ten year’s worth of your floor’s lifespan. This is because most garage floor paint nowadays is extremely durable against moisture, dirt, dust, and other damage, thanks to its extensive strength.

This means that your concrete floor will stay looking and feeling like new for a much longer period of time, which can save you a lot of money in the long run.

The bottom line is if you want to make your garage look amazing and remain protected, then investing in garage floor paint may be one of the best thing you can do for your home and finances.…
